Uitleg aan Donald Trump

Precies om 13.00 uur geeft de man met de hoed bij de veiligheidsdesk bij de lift in de lobby van de Trump Tower een kaart af voor Donald Trump. Een gele taxi schiet op de voorkant van links naar rechts voorbij. Het flitsende karakter van de snelheid is goed af te zien aan de vage contouren van de felle groene en rode reclamelichten op de achtergrond. Maar dat kan natuurlijk ook gewoon fotografische techniek zijn.

Bert, de beveiligingsman die hij hier gisteren, eergisteren en de dag ervoor trof, is er niet. Er staat iemand anders. Dit keer heeft de man met de hoed ook een brief geschreven, waarin hij Donald Trump uitlegt wat hij van hem vraagt. En ook wat niet.

'Dear Mister Trump,

I owe you an explanation.

For about a week now, everyday I deliver a postcard at the securitydesk next to the elevators in the lobby of the Trump Tower at Fifth Avenue. Addressed to you and only one question written on it; How do we build the Beloved Community? Each time the question is phrased slightly different, but the same question nonetheless. Not coincidentally.

26 and 27 October a conference is organized in Memphis, Tennessee. The Gandhi-King Conference. The theme of the conference is How do we build the beloved community? As a preparation for the conference I decided to travel to the USA and spend two months wandering around. Asking people that same question: how do we build the beloved community. I started off in New York.

I would like to have opinions of this question from all layers of society. It seemed like a good idea to stay with homeless people to find out what they think of it. Their views symbolize the downside of society. On the other end I want to know high society's vision. People like you symbolize that end of society. There you have it; now you know my intentions for those postcards.

Allow me to be frank and clear. I do not seek a job, your money or your business. I intend to remain jobless the rest of my life. I own a company in my home country, and that satisfies my professional needs sufficiently. I allready have all the money in the world. Why then should I want more of what I have enough? And as for business: something tells me you and I would not get along very well businesswise, so it's better to stay out of it.

So, more importantly, having stated what I do not seek, what is it I do want? Your attention. More specific; a moment of your time. To be even more specific; a satisfying answer to the question How do we build the Beloved Community? Of course, I might read one of your books. The one on the America we deserve for instance. But that's not the same as a straight answer, now is it? It would be like beating around the bush.

Now I'm not naive nor stupid enough to think I fit in your busy schedule somehow. But surely you have co-workers that are able to find 27 minutes of your time. And if that is asked too much, eleven will do. September 13 I will go to India. Hopefully we meet before. If not, I'll be back the 27th.

Een kaartje van de Luister-en-Vertel-Tournee, Listen and Tell in het Engels, heeft hij bij de brief in de enveloppe gedaan.

Niet altijd stipt om een uur, maar wel elke dag geeft hij een kaart af. Niet dat hij de illusie heeft te denken dat het hem daadwerkelijk lukt Donald Trump te spreken te krijgen. Hij mag dan door sommigen dwaas genoemd worden, hij is niet gek. Het beste waarop hij hopen mag is een of andere reactie van een medewerker. Een emailtje van een PA, een briefje van een secretaresse, een telefoontje van een stagiair, of iets anders waar hij zo gauw niet aan denkt. Stiekum is hij ervan overtuigd dat als hij maar lang genoeg volhoudt, er vroeg of laat een reactie komt. En als hij er maar voor zorgt dat zijn acties oprecht, eerlijk en gemeend zijn, zal die reactie, hoe klein en onbetekend ook, positief en daarmee waardevol zijn.

Actie = Reactie. Iedere actie leidt vroeg of laat onvermijdelijk tot een reactie. Wat denkt u? Waar zal de volharding van de man met de hoed toe leiden? En wat zal het antwoord van Donald zijn? En, iets heel anders, waar zijn uw acties op gericht?

2.
Misschien vindt u het wel leuk deze brief door te sturen. Dan wordt het een soort kettingbrief. U moet het zelf weten, hoor. Niets moet.

3.
Misschien, heel misschien is de brief van de man met de hoed u wel een euro waard. Als dat zo is, doneer het aan rekeningnummer 1689.67.456 van de Stichting Luister en Vertel Tournee te Oisterwijk. Maar alleen als u het een euro waard vindt. Anders niet.
